Professional Profile
Prof. Dr. Aleksandar Ivanov (born 1986, Skopje) is a Full Professor and Head of the Research Center at the Faculty of Security – Skopje, University “St. Kliment Ohridski” – Bitola (UKLO), where he completed all levels of his higher education. Through extensive academic engagement and applied field research, he has established himself as one of the leading regional experts in Security Sector Reform (SSR) and the development of crisis and disaster management systems.
Professor Ivanov’s academic and professional work is characterized by a strong combination of theoretical rigor and practical applicability, positioning him as a key contributor to contemporary debates on security governance in Southeast Europe.
Focus and Research Approach
At the core of Professor Ivanov’s expertise lies the intersection between democratic governance and security architecture. He is the originator and proponent of the concept of “engineering of legitimate force”, an analytical and operational framework based on the premise that the state’s monopoly on the use of force must be structured through legally grounded, transparent, and accountable mechanisms.
This approach emphasizes that security institutions must function as guardians of democratic values and human rights, rather than as instruments of coercion detached from public oversight.
Academic Philosophy and Vision
Professor Ivanov’s scholarly philosophy is grounded in the conviction that Security Science represents an autonomous, empirically measurable, and methodologically robust discipline, distinct from purely political or ideological narratives. His work advocates for transforming security from an abstract or declarative concept into an operational reality, achieved through:
-
Advanced methodologies for risk assessment and threat prediction,
-
Evidence-based security planning, and
- The systematic building of institutional resilience.
As an educator, his mission extends beyond the transfer of theoretical knowledge. He is committed to shaping a new generation of “security architects”—professionals capable of systemic thinking and effective management of the hybrid, asymmetric, and multidimensional threats defining the 21st-century security environment.
