Prof. Dr. Omar Ashour, Senior Research Fellow of the Institute for National and International Security (INIS) and Professor of Security and Military Studies, participated in the Yalta European Strategy (YES) Forum in Kyiv, Ukraine.

During the roundtable titled “Values and Reality: A Global View from Ukraine”, Prof. Ashour addressed key topics concerning Ukraine’s defence and international security, presenting insights derived from his ongoing research on hybrid defencecomparative combat and military effectiveness in Europe and the Middle East, and his extensive experience in counter-insurgency (COIN) and counter-terrorism (CT) studies.

In his remarks, Prof. Ashour emphasised the evolving character of hybrid warfare and the importance of developing integrated strategies that enhance national resiliencemilitary adaptability, and societal cohesion during prolonged conflict. His intervention reflected academic depth and practical understanding of contemporary defence challenges, aligning with INIS’s mission to advance Security Science and international cooperation.

Prof. Ashour highlighted his profound respect for the Ukrainian defenders and expressed admiration for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s inspiring address and tribute to Ukraine’s fallen heroes. The forum gathered leading global experts, diplomats, and policymakers — including Olena Lennon, Gabrielius Landsbergis, Svitlana Kovalchuk, Hanna Shelest, and Volodymyr Yarmolenko — to discuss the future of European and global security architecture.

A notable event moment was the presence of former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, whose message to “keep up the fight” resonated strongly among participants and symbolised enduring international solidarity with Ukraine.
