Prof. Dr. John M. Nomikos, Director of the Research Institute for European and American Studies (RIEAS) and Founding Member of the Institute for National and International Security (INIS), participated as an invited presentation speaker at the National (Turkish) Intelligence Academy Conference, held in Istanbul from 10 to 12 October 2025.
In his presentation titled “European Intelligence Cooperation: From the Breakup of Yugoslavia to the Ukraine-Russia War,” Prof. Nomikos provided a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of European intelligence collaboration over the past three decades. His lecture explored how intelligence cooperation mechanisms in Europe have been shaped by successive crises—from the Balkan conflicts in the 1990s to the ongoing war in Ukraine—emphasizing lessons learned and the challenges of integrating intelligence sharing within EU and NATO frameworks.
Prof. Nomikos highlighted the increasing importance of intelligence fusion, strategic foresight, and hybrid threat assessment, noting that the European security architecture must adapt to new geopolitical realities, disinformation operations, and non-state actors. He underlined the need for a coherent European intelligence policy capable of supporting collective defense, counter-hybrid efforts, and democratic resilience.
As one of Europe’s leading experts in intelligence and security studies, Prof. Nomikos’s participation further strengthened academic and professional cooperation between RIEAS, INIS, and partner institutions in Turkey. His address drew significant interest from scholars, practitioners, and officials attending the event, contributing to a deeper understanding of the dynamics of European intelligence transformation amid current global challenges.
