The Institute for National and International Security (INIS) proudly highlights the participation of its Senior Research Fellow, Thomas Wegener Friis, at a high-level international conference held in Helsinki dedicated to the study of Soviet occupation in Europe from the end of the Second World War until 1994.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Wegener Friis, who also serves as Director of the Center for Cold War Studies at the University of Southern Denmark and Executive Director of the International Intelligence History Association, joined leading European experts and historians in discussions focused on the long-term strategic, political, and security consequences of Soviet occupation across Europe.

The conference emphasized that the study of Cold War history is not only a matter of historical scholarship, but also an important contribution to understanding contemporary European security challenges, particularly in the context of the ongoing conflict involving the Russian Federation. Special attention was given to the role of historians and security experts in identifying and addressing the legacy of military contamination, unexploded ordnance, and dangerous wartime remnants that continue to pose both security and financial burdens for European states.

During the conference, Prof. Dr. Wegener Friis further strengthened cooperation with several important European partners, including the Max Weber Network Eastern Europe (MWNO), the Zentrum für Militärgeschichte der Bundeswehr, and Museum Berlin-Karlshorst. Following two successful conferences, the participating institutions are now planning joint academic publications and preparing applications for future European-funded research projects.

INIS considers this type of international academic and strategic cooperation essential for the further development of Security Science, Intelligence Studies, and European security culture. The participation of Prof. Dr. Thomas Wegener Friis once again confirms the strong international position of INIS and its network of globally recognized scholars and experts dedicated to advancing security-related research and interdisciplinary cooperation.
