Marco Lombardi, Senior Research Fellow of the Institute for National and International Security (INIS) and Full Professor at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, participated in the First Italy-Japan National Security Forum held on 25–26 May 2026 in Milan.

The high-level closed forum, organized by ITSTIME and the Defense Technology Foundation at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, brought together senior experts, military officials, researchers, and technology specialists from Italy and Japan to discuss emerging security challenges and future conflict scenarios.

According to Prof. Marco Lombardi, the forum focused on the impact of new technologies on modern warfare and intelligence environments, as well as on strategic cooperation between Italy and Japan in the field of national security and technological innovation.

Special attention during the discussions was dedicated to:

  • autonomous warfare technologies,
  • next-generation drone systems,
  • electromagnetic warfare,
  • emerging multi-domain conflict environments,
  • intelligence transformation,
  • cyber and hybrid threats,
  • and the growing role of disruptive technologies in shaping future battlefields.

Prof. Lombardi emphasized that electromagnetic warfare is increasingly a central element in redefining contemporary conflict management and strategic military operations.

The forum also highlighted the importance of international cooperation, knowledge exchange, and strategic partnerships between allied nations facing rapidly evolving global security challenges.

INIS welcomes the continued international engagement of its Senior Research Fellows in leading global discussions dedicated to security, defence innovation, intelligence, and emerging technologies.
