The Institute for National and International Security (INIS) is pleased to highlight the participation of Prof. Shaohua Yan, an INIS member, in an international conference in Bratislava, Slovakia, focused on relations between China and the Visegrád Group (V4).

Prof. Yan is Associate Professor and Deputy Director at Fudan University, specializing in EU–China relations, geoeconomics, European affairs, and international economic cooperation. He also serves as Associate Editor of the Asia Europe Journal.

The Bratislava conference brought together distinguished scholars, business leaders, experts, and policymakers from China and the Visegrád countries, providing a platform to discuss the evolving economic and strategic relationship between China and Central Europe.

A central theme of the conference concerned the potential role of pragmatic engagement and Chinese investment in strengthening the position of V4 countries within high-value manufacturing and strategic value chains.

This issue has grown in importance amid the transformation of the global economy, increasing competition over strategic industries and technologies, supply-chain restructuring, and the broader debate over Europe’s economic security and industrial competitiveness.

Another important concept discussed during the conference was the possibility of developing a “V4 Plus” format. Such an approach could broaden existing frameworks for dialogue and cooperation and create additional opportunities to connect Central European countries with partners beyond the traditional Visegrád framework.

From a broader geopolitical and geo-economic perspective, discussions of this kind are particularly significant because Central Europe increasingly represents an important intersection of European, transatlantic, and Asian economic interests. Investment, infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, technology, trade, and strategic supply chains are therefore no longer exclusively economic questions but increasingly form part of the wider security environment.

Prof. Yan’s participation contributed to discussions on how China–V4 relations could develop amid changing international circumstances and how pragmatic economic cooperation can be balanced with European countries’ strategic priorities and economic-security considerations.

The conference also provided an important opportunity for direct dialogue among representatives of academia, business, and policymaking communities from across China and Central Europe, demonstrating the value of maintaining professional and research communication channels in an increasingly complex international environment.

Prof. Shaohua Yan’s participation in the Bratislava conference represents another contribution by an INIS member to high-level international dialogue on issues at the intersection of geopolitics, geoeconomics, economic security, strategic investment, and international cooperation.

For INIS, member engagement in such international forums is particularly important for strengthening the Institute’s global academic network and contributing to informed discussion on the changing architecture of European and international security.

INIS congratulates Prof. Shaohua Yan on his participation in the Bratislava conference and his continued contribution to international academic dialogue and cooperation between Europe and China.
